This morning I woke to a sound I have not heard in months--a bird calling to one of its friends. It is actually warm enough today for birds to open there little beaks without freezing to death!
We are supposed to get all the way up to a balmy 47 degrees, not just today but for the next several days. Our 2 feet of snow will turn into several different ponds around our yard. Our icy driveway will become a mud pit, since we haven't replaced the gravel yet. And I guarantee, my kids will be outside in shorts at some point today because they will think it is so warm! Of course, D3 was snow blowing our driveway in shorts and winter boots the other day when we got our lates layer of snow so that probably doesn't mean much.
Anyways, I am so excited for blessed warmth!!

It is so cold...
the snow has goose bumps!
I suppose what I am seeing is just frost on top of the drifts. I just wish I had a good camera to show you.
When it is -8 degrees, everything has goosebumps!!

To Facebook or Not To Facebook?
That is the question of the week for me.
Big D joined that bandwagon last week, which totally explains why I am even thinking about it. It all happened because a girl from his highschool class is on a mission to get all 27 of their classmates reunited through facebook.
It all sounds very innocent perhaps, but facebook appears to be very addictive. And I am getting increased pressure to join the crowd.
"Everyone is doing it." "It is so fun!!" "It will be good for you!" "God wants you to be on Facebook." (Ok, that last one isn't really anything anyone has ever said to me, but I threw it in just for kicks.)
So I have steadfastly resisted the peer pressure! And yet I still wonder if it is just a matter of time before I am asking if you will be my friend.
Are you a facebooker? I spend enough time on the computer with my emails and "creating" an occasional blog. Is it really worth more time on the computer? Would be interested if you had any input.

Today I am...
...listening to rain drops on my back deck through the open windows.
...watching Sweet Home Alabama for the umpteenth time.
...labeling items for a Brazil fundraiser garage sale still fueled by a Skinny Biggby's Teddy Bear from this AM.
...thankful there is a big empty space in my dayplanner from noon on.

Oh, Hail!!!
Yes I did too just type that!!
It is storming this evening and I am home with 2 little girlies, J and a little friend of hers. They are watching a movie and I am trying to sort out a 5th grade Sunday School lesson. The rest of the crew are at a pro b-ball game to which we were given 4 great tickets, and it just so happens that today is C's big 12th. (Crazy!!!)
So it started to rain really, really, really hard. In fact, we are in a tornado watch, which is vaguely amusing now that we no longer live in tornado alley. A brief thought flashed through my mind about the back windows in D3's car being open, then I dismissed it. They surely got rolled up. Right! And then came the wind and hail as a compliment to the blinding rain. So I ran out into the storm in my pj's (yep!) and socks to pull in the car (stick shift), quickly see that the back left window is indeed down as I try and back up, promptly kill the car, apparently because the emergency break is still on, restart, peel out and skid forward into the garage.
Next Big D's truck. (Still not sold, by the way.) I run into the house to grab his keys, then back out only to realize I first have to move 2 bikes and a kennel with a big 90 lb scaredy-cat black lab in it, and then back into the storm. Parking a dooley in a garage aint easy, especially when there is already a car in there. Congratulating myself on successfully not scratching any paint, and collapsed against the wall in wet muddy socks with the cat calmly looking at me like I am a complete loon, I watch the garage door go down and note that it is not only no longer hailing, but it has also stopped blowing and raining. In fact, the sun is shining quite brightly again.
Oh, hail!!!
Editors note: If you find it offensive that it sounded a whole lot like I just cussed on the internet, please note that the spell check option has been used and that certain voice inflections can drastically alter the meaning of a given phrase. Besides, I am anonymous. (:

Comfort Food
The last few days I have been pondering one of the deeper questions in life. Just how bad does your day have to get for comfort food to be justified? And I am not talking about meatloaf or fried chicken, which I suppose have some nutritional value. I am talking the real comfort food like:
*Hot tea and crispy slices of buttered toast
*Dr. Pepper/lime with chips and salsa
*choc. chip cookies and ice cold 2% milk
Any of those options sound good to me right now!! If I had half a brain I would probably go exercise, but where is the fun in that?!
Besides, I can't work out because I "injured" myself on the ice getting out of my car in a parking lot and I am still so sore you would think I had run a marathon. It was totally unexpected, which I suppose most of these accidents actually are by definition. With my arms outstretched and flailing I collided with a suburban parked next to me. Keys in one hand and purse in the other! And there was someone in the car!!!!!!! So I swallowed my pride and tapped on the window to apoligize. (Note: I hadn't just bumped against this car, I slammed into it with all I had.) The guy rolled his window down 1/4 of an inch and looked at me like I was a loon! When I apoligized and explained I wasn't really attacking his nice, shiny vehicle but had slipped on the ice, I assumed I would get a "no problem" type statement. In fact, I might get a "are you ok" type statement to which I would reply that I was just fine and all would be well. What I got was the tiniest of nods and a window shut immediately on me. It literally added insult to injury! Was that a bad enough day?
Or perhaps it is the kind of day when, on the drive home after you have just learned a friend is moving out of the country, you find your dog in the middle of the road. Don't worry, Truck was fine. He had just run away...again...and so I popped him in the car and shut the door. As if on cue, he promptly began to "toss his cookies". He had apparently been playing trashman in our neighbors yard. Their trash was his treasure, and now it was on the floor of my car!! ICK!!! Was that a bad enough day?
Well, I am off to get a cup of tea. And things can only get better from here!!

Answering Machine Etiquette
I need some advice. My husband and I can't agree on how to handle the "situation" and I would value some input.
We each have our cell phones. We also have our home phone number (high speed internet access). I typically hand that home number out to people who don't necessarily need us immediately (school directories, church directory, businesses, etc.). We also get quite a few telemarketing calls on that home number. I have the machine set on 2 rings and typically don't answer it. It just takes messages which we can collect when we have a free moment.
Here is my issue. There have been a couple instances where people have left messages on the home number and I have not retrieved them until several days later because someone has hit the play button to get rid of the annoying beep.
I have been told to just turn off the machine. So I did. But then I had both my cell phone and my home phone ringing...I just couldn't take that insanity anymore!! Some people hang up after 7 rings and try all over again (perhaps hoping for a machine to click on?). So the machine is back on for now.
Do I let the phone ring continually without an answering machine, unplug the home phone, or do I have an anwering machine that sometimes doesn't get checked within a 24 hour period of time?

It's Just One of Those Days
Torpid topics rife with undeniably tedious qualities pervade my cranium. Thus, I will endeavor to ignite my creative thought process through the perusal of my reference-book-with-alphabetically-arranged-words.
Alas, creativity yet eludes me!
Therefore, I shall utilize abstruse verbage discovered in the aforementioned reference book, and close with the following inane utterance: writers-block stinks!

What My Latte Says About Me and My Responses:
I stole this survey from Kellie's blog over at La Vida Dulce. If you want to take the survey, click over to hers because I don't know how to get it on mine. (:
My latte of choice is caramel, regular, with skim milk and this is what the survey said:
"You don't treat yourself very often. (Nope, try again!) You find that indulging doesn't jibe with your very disciplined life." (Nope! Still wrong.)
"You can be quite silly at times,(Yes, just most people don't see it!) but you know when to buckle down and be serious." (I am a 37 year old mother of 4 children...of course I can buckle down and be serious!)
"You have a good deal of energy, (from about 10:24AM - 10:36 AM!) but you pace yourself.( I try. I don't have that much energy to work with, remember. Refer back to # 2 if you want to know why.) You never burn out too fast." ( I am somewhat idealistic and so therefore I often burn out too fast. But then I bounce back to life. It all works out!)
"You're addicted to caffeine." (Likely, but the type found in tea, which will actually extend my life if you read the right internet data.) There's no denying it." (I'm not denying it so get off my back, ok?!)
"You are responsible, mature, and truly an adult. You're occasionally playful,(Right, we already covered that in item 2. ) but you find it hard to be carefree." (Just give me a few minutes and I will get there!)
"You are sophisticated and daring, but you are never snobby." (I so have everyone fooled!)

Avoidance
Avoidance isn't always a bad thing. For instance, Kellie at La Vida Dulce has found that avoiding the full-on media blitz that happens 24/7 in this country allows her a level of personal peace. I have another pal who keeps completely away from all alcohol because of the pain that abuse of alcohol has caused in her family.
But it isn't always good either. I personally avoid watching intense movies or reading intense books. For some reason, my imagination will place me in whatever scenario is unfolding and I will emotionally "experience" sadness, hurt, loneliness, loss, fear...whatever is taking place in the story.
So what is the big deal? How this affects my husband and my date night. He likes intense films. He thinks they are exciting and finds my standby entertainment of chick-flicks a little tedious.
Well, we have sat on 2 movies for the last week, both dramas. One was Pay it Forward and the other Amazing Grace. I felt totally hoodwinked by Pay it Forward's ending, but still managed to handle it fairly well. But I was avoiding Amazing Grace because I was afraid of how it would portray the horrors of slave trade.
I was wrong to avoid it for this long. Perhaps it wasn't the greatest film in the history of film making, but it held my attention so completely and was so moving that I was actually sorry when it came to an end. For Wilberforce to have persisted through years of discouragement and through so many obstacles to follow through on what he felt called to...it was inspiring to me!! I need to learn from his example!!
And another lesson learned, I shouldn't avoid things just because they will be intense. That being said, there is balance in everything! I still don't want to give up on my chick-flicks, thank you very much.

What is today?
As I sit down to write, I am having a strange moment of panic. I haven't the foggiest idea what the date is today. But I do know it is Tuesday. (Isn't it?!)
Ok, self, don't panic...you know your personal schedule for today, whatever date it might be. Process through your schedule, perhaps it will come to you!!
This morning I cleaned, folded, and straightened like a fiend while the girls got ready for school because I had women coming over for coffee. They arrived and we discussed Foster's chapter on Prayer and then did some praying ourselves. After handing them their coats, here I am sitting at the computer wondering what on earth todays date is. (Not part of my original schedule but then I am such a very spontaneous person) In a second I am going to throw some potato's in the crock pot for soup, I am heading out the door to do some errands (cat food cause she spilled the entire container on wet garage floor...ick) and hopefully will find my way into the gym for at least 30 minutes of sanity running. Race back home, in a slow way due to the snow coming down, and make time for a quick shower. Then back out the door to pick up the girls, D3 from practice, and down to M's basketball game. Run the kids back home, slop some soup in some bowls for a family dinner, and then D and I are back out the door for Missions meeting tonight.
Ok, it is December-something. I am sure it will come to me soon...
Oh, the other day I completely forgot C's birthdate. Just blanked! I was embarrassed. And then, in a completely separate incident, I referred to this year as 2006. At least I caught myself on that one.
Hah!! December 4th!!! Whew, I feel better now! (Sorta'!!)

The Dog Is Sold

4 Christmas' ago, Big D named our new black labrador puppy "Truck". Actually, the official name is Holden'sBlackPowderTruck. He was 8 weeks old when he joined our pack and certainly NOT the runt of the litter. The name was a good fit due to his size but also because, at the time, D didn't own a truck and we would laugh that the only way he was going to ever get one was to name the dog Truck.
Shortly after this D found his dream vehicle...a big black 4 wheel drive dooley diesel. Since our move up north, the vehicle has certainly gotten its share of comments. (We do live in suburbia and we aren't in Tejas anymore.) People are also amused at the name of our labrador, and he gets his share of comments as well. Anyways, much to our amusement, several of our friends decided to name D's truck "Dog".
For the past few months, the realization has slowly been hitting us that driving the truck doesn't make sense any longer. So D put a sign in the window and yesterday the sad day arrived. Dog has been sold.
D is mourning a little bit, but I just keep reminding him that:
1. a mini-van isn't exactly my dream vehicle
2. he still has Truck, the big black goofy dog that he is
They even do devotions together when its warm outside!

Denial or Therapy?
Have you ever had one of those days where there's emotional stuff swirling around you from all sorts of directions, but you just aren't going to deal with it? You choose to ignore "it" and allow "it" to just go away for a little while? That is my day today this far! Some might call it denial...
I started my morning off with a professional massage, which was given to me for my birthday last month. Hopped over to the last half of Bible study and had a sweet time of prayer with some ladies from church. Came home and changed back into my PJ's. Next came a leisurely lunch followed by a Hersheys bar (full size) while finishing up a mindlessly pleasant piece of fiction. Fire in the fireplace, raindrops on the window, total silence, bliss!! Book finished, I took a Dr. Phil personality test, which was surprisingly accurate and therefore somewhat amusing. (go to psychcentral.com/personquiz.htm) And now here I an blogging about my state of lazy denial to the great big world of internet. Should I be embarrassed?
Strangely, the emotional swirly stuff isn't so overwhelming to me as it was earlier. I actually feel rested up and ready to face some of the things that need to be faced, and which ones those are seem clearer then before. Some might call a day like today denial but it has felt more like therapy!

Update on A Cow's Eyeball
Success! You will be so relieved to hear that I survived the dissection yesterday and didn't have to leave the room once. Well, I did leave once, but it was to run an errand for the teacher that, providentially, couldn't wait a minute longer. She desperately needed a trash bag and, frankly, it was up to me to make that trash bag happen for her.
My son was a pro at dissection, as I watched him from the far back right corner of the room next to the open window. He is the one who not so long ago suddenly came down with the "flu" when on a hunting trip with his dad. The "flu" hit right about the time the deer was being dressed. But no "flu" symptoms showed up today as he carved and observed and prodded the huge knobby smelly thing.
What have I learned from my brief foray into the world of 8th grade science?
1. I was very wise to not have pursued anything scientific for my vocation.
2. While it may be "interesting" and "educational" to observe the dissection of a cow's eyeball once in my life, I am quite sure it needn't be a recurring thing. Thank goodness!!

A Cow's Eyeball
There comes a day in a person's life when she must dissect a cow's eyeball. Apparently, today is that day for me. My son's 8th grade science class desperately needs my assistance (I am told) and I will be there for them!! I will let you know if anything "interesting" happens.

My Favorite Cartoon...
was Loonie Tunes. Wasn't it everyones? My favorite character, though, may be a bit different then yours. I adored the Abominable Snowman. "I will love him, and hug him, and call him George.", he would say in his goofy voice as he squeezed the eyeballs out of poor Bugs Bunny.
When I was first married I had a pet lop-eared bunny named George. He was sweet but he didn't last too long into the marriage. I found that taking care of a husband and a little cocker spaniel and a bunny named George was just too much responsibility. So he was shipped off to a classroom to become the class mascot. I can just picture some little chubby 3rd grader loving him and hugging him and wondering how poor George ever came by that name.
